Do a lot of women work in tech support? I have noticed there are some in the company I work at.

Yes, some call centers here hire men and even women to work for them as customer service reps and also technical support staff. More and more women are studying this course and they can be very good at it.

What's involved with this job? Is there a technical knowledge required? I do know someone who does this for a living. I wasn't sure what the salary for this was.

Customer service representatives working in traditional call centers generally earn $8 to $9 per hour, and the companies generally require
• At least basic computer skills
• Good to excellent "people skills" to properly deal with customers
• Education ranging from some high school to a college degree
It's also possible to get a work-at-home customer service job either from a call center or a large company that uses work at home agents who generally earn $13 to $14, since the company is saving money on office rent, utilities and equipment. Also you may be eligible to take deductions at tax time for business use of your home an added bonus.
You will need a modern computer
• At least basic computer skills
• A fast Internet connection, such as a DSL or cable modem
• A phone line dedicated to your home-based call center, with unlimited long-distance dialing
The hiring company may --- but more likely will not-- reimburse you for some of this. They may also ask that you take a short training course.
If you want to work from home and receive an income you can count on, this can be one way to go.
Let us hear if you give it a try!
