Where do you usually go to find freelance writing jobs? This site looks like a tremendous resource and I plan on coming back here often. I've also had good luck with WritersWeekly and FreelanceWriting.com.

I've had some good luck with CraigsList.org .  One of my major freelance jobs was landed through there.  I wrote for that client for nearly a year until I had to get a regular job to get some unexpected bills paid.

I've found that some of the sites out there are not great and, if you get in with one that takes new freelancers, you're doing fairly well.

There are some sources one can go to for freelance writing jobs:

Sunoasis Jobs - http://www.sunoasis.com/
Writing, editing, copywriting, PR, and other positions.

As mentioned, craigslist - http://www.craigslist.org
Search for freelance positions by entering "freelance" as a keyword in the search box on the front page of the site. Or click on the city that interests you and review the list of job openings.

Writer's Weekly - http://www.writersweekly.com/markets_and_jobs.php
Writer's Weekly has an excellent selection of freelance writing jobs, articles, a discussion newsletter and a free weekly jobs newsletter.

There's a site I've just discovered ( so no guarantees), a writer's marketplace at http://www.helium.com/ which pays writers a % of the ad revenue for articles they post there. The site gets to sell the article and keep the money so I don't know how good a deal this is for writers but they will get a lot of exposure and possibly other job offers from it.

Good luck,

Awomen:D

Mediabistro.com is a good resource for freelance writers.  I haven't had a chance to explore it as I just found it Sunday.

There are several sites here that I haven't ever heard of. I really hope to land some good ones with one of these sites. Thanks so much! I don't know how you all find such great sites...

Associated Content is one place that you can get paid to write articles, I don't know much about them, but I have heard of people making a steady income with them.

I was very interested to learn about Associate Content. It's another very well funded site, somewhat on the same model as Helium.com. In this case, there are a lot of tools for writers, forums, and suggestions, graphics and links which writers can use to promote their work which can be text, audio or video. Also, they do some training of people to write copy that grabs the attention of search engines

The way the process works is Content Producers can publish their work immediatlely, with no review process, if they don't request payment. If they request payment. AC may either decline or choose to offer them payment ranging from $3 to $10 depending on the editors' view of the optimization and quality of the article. Payment is made via PayPal on various days of the week.

Not that it should concern any writers, but there is a bit of controversy over the fact that the site is designed, partly, to make money off Google Adsense and Tim Armstrong, head of advertising for Google in North America is on the board. However that issues shakes out -- and many don't think it's worth mentioning-- it appears that the need for content on th web is so great that well funded Venture Capitalists are going out and making it happen with sites like this one and Helium.com.

So, writers, once more, content is King:dude:

Let us hear if any of you try out writing for this site,

I write on Helium.com. They only pay a few cents an article if your article is rated in the top 5. Your articles are rated by your peers. The money is not good, but it is good for beginning writers to learn. I also write for Associated Content. They pay anywhere from $3.00 to $50.00 if they accept your piece. You can write about basically anything. It is a family oriented website. I am looking at job boards on freelancewriting.com. I signed on to Elite SEO and I typed 10 articles for them which were accepted, but I never got paid for them. They said the client refused to pay them so they couldn't pay us. Then they said look for payment in 8 days. 8 days came and went. My question is, when you make an agreement to write for a company, is there a contract you should request that stipulates that you will be paid for your work?

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with Helium and Associated Content. Sorry to hear about your experience of not getting paid for Elite SEO. Regarding your question about contracts:

If you go to Elance.com - I believe you have to register but it's free - under resources they have a wealth of resources such as Recommended Steps for Each Phase of Your Project and a good sample contract at
http://www.elance.com/p/corporate/community/resource-center/contract-buyer-provider.html

The problem here is, although the contract clarifies all the terms, how are you going to enforce it? You don't want to spend $2000 on a lawyer to enforce a $200 contract. Unfortunately angry or even polite, reasonable emails won't get you anyplace either.

One way to deal with this is to only work with extremely reputable and well funded sites. You can go to a website's "About us" section or their "Faq", or look up articles about them in Google, and if you see a lot of well established names, and sometimes, a venture capitalist investment in the $5 million range, you can be pretty sure they will pay you, although like Helium, if they pay you "peanuts", it still doesn't help. After that first payment, let experience be your guide and don't do too much work until you've been paid for what you've already done.

Another route is to work through a site like Elance.com. It's somewhat the same concept as Paypal, in that they are a big, powerful company that sets out to enforce the integrity of their transactions. For example, if someone wrongfully bills you on Paypal, Paypal will get your money refunded to you, or bar the company from Paypal forever. It is a similar situation on Elance, although perhaps not as absolute. If all your correspondance is on Elance, and all your agreements, including your contract, if someone does not pay you and you tell them you will notify Elance, I would guess there would be a mad scramble to get you paid. That is one of the big values of eLance.

Incidently, there are a lot of writing jobs posted on eLance. Some that I've seen are longer, like books, but you can always submit a project schedule with milestones, with so much paid up front, so much at regular intervals and so much at completion. It's a bidding situation, so the price is dependent on how much someone else is willing to do the same work for. However, if you get established with one or more buyers, they won't be looking for price as much as quality of work and dependability. It's always good to have your work posted on a website where potential buyers can take a look at the quality and your style, which can both be selling factors.

Another - and perhaps the best - method for getting paid is to either request money up front via Paypal or post your article to a hidden part of your website and create a Paypal button with a download link to get the article after payment has been made. ( Immediate digital download with payment always makes buyers feel secure.

Good luck;)

Helium is advertising for writers now.  As mentioned previously in this forum, pay is not so great, but one does get some exposure.

Also, there's a new forum just for freelance jobs:
