Bwhite on our job boards says "there are many factors that go into deciding about an internet business. The first thing for starting ANY new business is to decide if you are truly disciplined enough for it. You have to be able to keep from being distracted or lazy and not working your business (especially if it's an "at home" business). For an internet business you have to look at several things: marketing, advertising, customer base, is your product unique or will it be competitively priced? Will you create and maintain your own website or have someone else do it?
Here are my tips for an internet business: Be patient as things will NOT happen over night; Have some money set aside for advertising or marketing your product/service; Become familiar with key words, search engine optimization and meta tags; once you start don't plan on having much free time until your business is actually doing business.
It's a lot to do and a lot to work with. If you decide to do it, good luck!"
I totally agree with and will second Bwhite's comments on being patient, setting aside money for advertising or marketing and ,becoming familiar with key words, search engine optimization and meta tags.
I have launched a number of businesses, including an internet business. ( I'm what is sometimes known as a serial entrepreneur.)
There's not much doubt you can learn to master the technical facets of an internet business; there are sites--Web.com is one -- where you can pay a minimal amt., use a template and be up and running in a matter of hours. Then, little by little you can start learning more every day, through not just reading but real life experience about the technical pieces of the puzzle mentioned above. The real trick is deciding what service or product it is you are going to sell to make money, what is your unique selling point and how to get people to your site. ( Learning to use Google ad words to drive traffic is the topic of any number of books.)
If you are very persistent, and develop a passion for detail and testing ( success on the Net is much more about minute detail than most people imagine) you can conquer these things. A more fundamental question is "How well can you tolerate risk?" Entrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes and different temperaments and work styles. There is only one thing all entrepreneurs have in common and that is the ability and willingness to take risks. The thought that keeps most entrepreneurs motivated during those anxiety provoking moments of starting a new business is the firm knowledge that great risk can reap great rewards. If you have or can develop that mindset, then you will definitely succeed.
Good luck....and let me know of any questions I might be able to help with or point you in the right direction.
